Gender and the Memories of Political Violence: Trajectories, Convergences, and Contemporary Challenges

Abstract

This paper examines the ways in which the concern about gender and about memory emerged in Argentina and the Southern Cone, framed in the context of the feminist and human rights movements from the 1960s onwards. When studying the development of the concepts of “gender” and “memory” in Latin America, what emerges is that, rather than parallel developments, they follow convergent paths, as parts of one and the same process of renewal of paradigms and models of analysis of unequal and conflictive social realities. Hence the need to recognize the historicity of the interpretive approaches and frameworks, which are based on the historicity of memories and gender relations themselves.
