Urban Wanderers: Invisibilizing Doubling in El huésped by Guadalupe Nettel and Tras las huellas de mi olvido by Bibiana Camacho

Abstract
This article, through a critical analysis of El huésped (2006) by Guadalupe Nettel and Tras las huellas de mi olvido (2010) by Bibiana Camacho, examines how contemporary Mexican literature reflects female experiences in the city. Both authors employ invisibility through doubling or self-effacing doubling as a literary device to represent these experiences, particularly in Mexico City. The study explores literature’s capacity to enrich urban studies and shows how these works present their protagonists as figures who resort to invisibility as a strategy of resistance against an environment that limits their freedom and autonomy. Unlike the flâneur, who
enjoys, anonymity without risk, the protagonists of these works seek a balance between visibility and safety. From an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective, the article delves into the way that literature addresses the dynamics of power and gender-based violence in the urban context, while also highlighting the urgency of structural changes toward more just and inclusive cities.
