Inhabiting discomfort in other people´s houses. Women allegadas and household micropolitics in Santiago de Chile
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article examines the experiences of women who make home within the homes of others, a condition known in Chile as allegamiento. The study situates the contemporary home as a space shaped by gender dynamics, emotions, and everyday interactions marked by inequality. Drawing on a phenomenological and biographical approach, the research is based on life stories of five Chilean women of different ages and on the reconstruction of domestic scenes that reveal how living in another’s home is experienced under conditions of precarity and dependence. The findings show that discomfort constitutes an embodied and persistent experience, produced through the interaction of bodies, norms, and spatial arrangements, and that it operates as an everyday pedagogy of dwelling. Through practices of adjustment, women regulate their presence, sustain coexistence, and delineate margins of autonomy within a domestic order they do not fully control. The article proposes understanding these experiences through the notion of uncomfortable geographies, highlighting discomfort as a form of practical knowledge that makes visible the hierarchies and boundaries of the home, thereby challenging hegemonic definitions associated with property and stability.
